Why I Turned My Clean Romance Series Into Audiobooks

When I first wrote the Southern Storms series, I never imagined hearing Morgan and Sean’s voices echo in my earbuds. But with the rise in audiobook popularity—and my own love of listening to stories while commuting or doing chores—I started exploring what it would take to turn my clean romance series into audiobooks.

Today, I’m pulling back the curtain on what goes into producing clean romance audiobooks—costs, narrators, AI options, and why I ultimately chose to bring the Southern Storms series to life in this new format.

🎧 Why Audio—and Why Now?

For a long time, creating an audiobook felt like a “someday” dream. Producing one professionally can be quite expensive, especially for indie authors. Between narrating and production costs, you’re easily looking at $1,000–$2,500 (or more!) per book. But I don’t regret any of it!!!

With my Southern Storms series gaining a steady following, I knew it was the perfect moment to bring the stories to life.

I started seeing audiobook creation not just as a business move, but as a way to meet you where you are—whether you’re a commuter, a multitasking mom, or someone who just prefers to listen to stories unfold.

🎙️ Human Narrator vs. AI vs. Author Narration

Yes, AI narration is an option these days—and I explored it! AI voices have come a long way, but for romance? Emotion matters. Every pause, every inflection, every heart-thumping moment needs to feel real. 

I tested an AI narration tool on one of my books, just to see what it would sound like. I just couldn’t… It still sounded off—still somewhat robotic and stilted. 

Then, I thought of recording my own… 🤣😂🤣 I had a good belly-laugh, then nixed that crazy idea.

So for the Southern Storms series, I chose talented human narrators who bring depth and warmth to the stories. In Fire Watch, you hear Sean speak with quiet strength, or Morgan’s uncertainty laced with determination—and that’s when you’ll know why the human touch matters.

📚 Why Fire Watch Was Great for Audio

Out of all the books in the Southern Storms series, Fire Watch has a particular cinematic quality to it. A single dad making every moment left with his teenage son count. A reluctant author on a journey of self-discovery and breathing new life into her stories. And a wildfire that changes everything.

The emotional arcs, the setting in the Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains, and the slow-burn chemistry made this book feel like it needed to be heard.

💡 What I Learned

Here’s what I wish I knew before I started:

• Ask your readers if they want audio—they’ll tell you! If there’s no demand, I’d say it’s safe to hold off a bit. Same for if you only have one book so far, unless the ebook or print version takes off. In that case, I’d go all out! But I do love for readers to have the option of listening to books, especially when it’s difficult to carve out “reading” time in the day.

• Don’t be afraid of the costs—there are payment plans, royalty-share options, and sometimes grants or funding opportunities for authors. Since I still have a day job, I chose to reinvest my eBook royalties to outright pay for production fees. Yes, it takes a while to recoup, but it’s so worth it! 

• If possible, produce the next book in the series as soon as possible—it helps if other books in the series are available in audiobooks so listeners can grab the next book when they’re done with the first one. It also gives me flexibility with discounts and promos, which helps recovering production cost much faster. Of course, I had to learn the hard way…

Would I do it again? Yes—and I already am. 😉 At the time I write this blog post, Christmas Blizzard is already in production.
